Our art, ourselves

An important part of kindergarten (arguably the MOST important) is developing a sense of self. This is where kids learn who they are, what their strengths are and what's important to them. They learn their place in the world and lay the foundation for a healthy mind and body.

As a cumulative project, the SKs spent the month of June painting self portraits to bring some of this learning home. They had to look at themselves critically and reflectively to create something accurate.

They started with a plan.

After reflecting on the plan together, they painted backgrounds. As inspiration, we listened to a little Bob Ross to get the juices flowing. He has a catchy tune on YouTube.

The final products are below. What does each painting reveal about the artist? Can you tell who is who? Answers are below.

Messy wet fun!

We had the perfect day to get messy outside. It's nice to remove some of the normal boundaries and let the students experience sensory activities with their whole bodies.

The shaving cream table got turned into a slip and slide soon enough!

The mud pit was the opposite of smooth and slippery.

Cornstarch and water makes a thick semi-liquid perfect to make into an ice cream shop.

Mama Jennie helped at the finger painting table...

Which soon became a body painting centre!

Cleaning up was a lot of fun too at the kid wash.

In all the fun there was a bit of time for a few quiet moments.
