Metamorphosis

The last day of school is always a little bittersweet. Of course it's wonderful to start a long vacation, but it is sad to let our SKs go. It's the end of a close relationship...never again will we have the same closeness, the same hugs. I'll never tend their scraped knees, or cradle them on my lap when they are sick. I'll never sing and dance with them, or play tag, or share a story again. We will wave hello in the halls, but it will be different. For ten months, I've loved these children; worried about them, comforted them, encouraged them, even dreamed about them. It is *very* hard to say goodbye.

Despite how the teachers feel, to five year olds the day is nothing but fun!  After some wonderful play in the morning, Sharon, Ann-Marie and I surprised the children with a sundae bar.

Smiles all around!

Then our SKs practiced some grade 1 skills, and visited their new classes and teachers. They were nervous to meet their new teachers, suddenly shy about what Grade 1 will bring.

We headed out to the garden to do one more check on our crop.

We watered the grade 8 graduation tree, planted on Monday. All too soon, it will be these guys planting their own tree.

When we got back to the room, a little surprise awaited us. Over a month ago, someone left a big caterpillar in a bug box over the weekend. It pupated and we've had a cocoon since then. Just this morning, Sharon and I wondered what to do with it over the summer.

Lo and behold, the moth emerged while we tended the garden. Just as Sharon and I are mourning the loss of our SKs and sending our little butterflies out of the cocoon of kindergarten, nature provided us with a reminder that we must let go. The world is an amazing place!

It's been a memorable year, filled with laughter, wonder, learning, and even a few tears.

Happy summer everyone!

Our art, ourselves...all done!

Can you guess who is who?

As you observe the art, ask yourself what it reveals about the artist. What details did they observe, dwell on, skip altogether? What does the art say about the artist's sense of self?

The Way to a Man's Heart....

....is through his stomach!

Happy Father's Day, dads and grandpas!
Our little people learned to measure accurately as they made your gift.

They patiently waited their turns too.

They read the ingredients and followed the instructions.

We hope you enjoyed your gift! We had fun making it.

How does your garden grow?

We've been hard at work tending our garden in the Green Classroom. First we weeded, then planted, watered, and lots more weeding. Last week we put on some mulch to finish it all off.

We even got our first harvest today!

The strawberries are getting ripe too.

The radishes were too colourful to resist!

Hmmm...will she like it?

Yes! Because we grew it ourselves, more students than usual tried the spicy root, and lots asked for seconds. Connecting children to their food and the earth it comes from is so important.

Our art, ourselves: part 2

The SKs have been working on their culumative project - self portraits.

It was time to put paint to canvas.

The children started with the backgrounds, each choosing a different colour expression.

Next they used their colour mixing and observation skills to make the perfect skin tone.

Next, they used the same skills to mix the hair colour.

And finally, facial features finished it off. Tune in soon for the finished products!

Sour+sweet=delicious!

The children were very curious about the huge leaves waiting for them this morning. Some of them recognized it as a delicious spring vegetable (though it's treated as a fruit) - rhubarb!

They chopped up the edible stems and we tried a piece straight. I wish I had captured those sour faces on film!

We decided to dip it in sugar.

That's better!

We used the leftovers to make rhubarb stew.

In only 15 minutes, we had a delicious afternoon snack. It disappeared so quickly I couldn't get a picture of anyone eating it....but trust me there were no leftovers!

Do you cook with your kids at home? Here's a good reference for when to introduce new skills.
